The former US Senator and Secretary of State was speaking on ABC-TV’s 7.30 with Leigh Sales.
In response to a question by Sales about whether “the enormous focus on Russia’s interference in the American election” should make Australia concerned about a similar risk from China, Mrs Clinton said, “Yes”.
“My answer is ‘yes’. Australia has a lot of interests with China.
“Certainly your economy is entwined with China, but I do think that Australia, along with other liberal democracies around the world, have got to take the threat of foreign interfere reasonably seriously.
“Because I know from just reading that there have been instances of exposures concerning political efforts by Chinese interests through contributions and other influence and efforts to really direct certain policy outcomes.
“Look, I think Australians need to be for Australians. Americans need to be for Americans.”
Mrs Clinton said Russia had “in a secret way” produced “more than 3500 ads to confuse our electorate, to try to damage me ... Facebook was accepting advertising in roubles [Russian currency].”

“If, in a similar way it was “the Chinese looking to try to influence policy, we should say, ‘No, I don’t care what side of the political aisle you might be on in Australia or the United States, we have a commitment to make sure decisions made by our governments are not the result of some kind of influence peddling by a foreign power’.”
