Playing wide receiver in NFL takes talent and skill. The talent comes easy and early. The skill at times can take a while. Cardinals rookie Christian Kirk appears to be a fast learner.

“It’s getting a lot better,” Kirk said after practice Sunday. “It’s getting a lot easier. I feel like I’ve made bounds and strides from when I first stepped in here.”

The Cardinals have a job opening at No. 2 receiver next to Larry Fitzgerald. Kirk is rapidly becoming one of the applicants after his four catch, one touchdown performance Friday in New Orleans. It’s production to complement Kirk’s notable preparation.

“I said this a while back – this guy comes to work as a pro every day,” Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks said. “You watch him in individual period, full speed. Special teams, full speed. He creates that mindset of practicing as how he wants to play.”

Kirk’s immediate impact was expected as a returner on special teams but the former Saguaro High School star admits he’s always had the mindset to contribute to the receiving corps right away.

“That’s for sure the goal,” said Kirk. “Anything less than that, I would be wrong if I didn’t have those expectations. I’ve said from day one I wanted to be a primary contributor, win games and make this a special season.”

“He just keeps getting better each and every day,” said Wilks. “It was a great confidence booster for him to have the game that he had and hopefully he will be able to build on this.”

Kirk’s high marks on the practice field, the film room and on game day no doubt enabled a bit by the guy who sits only a few lockers down. The Larry Fitzgerald factor cannot be overlooked when it comes the education of any Cardinals wide receiver.

“Being able to learn from Larry, guys who are veterans in this league – just to see how they think and how they approach the game [is important to me],” said Kirk. “I just kind of pick up little things every day and just try and run with it.”
