Beefy King restaurant will close Saturday as family members and friends take time to remember longtime owner Freeman Smith, who died July 29 at 93.

The restaurant is handing out reminders to customers that “In Remembrance of Freeman H. Smith, we will be closed Saturday August 25th.”

Smith died after suffering a stroke the day before.

Smith was the first franchisee of Beefy King on North Bumby Avenue and kept it open after the other restaurants in the chain closed. In the 50 years since it open, Beefy King has become one of Orlando’s most enduring restaurants by serving up simple roast beef sandwiches in an atmosphere that defies times.

Freeman Smith and his late wife Peggy were frequent visitors to the restaurant and promoted the family and neighborhood atmosphere that kept customers coming back for generations.

Smith’s granddaughter Shannon Woodrow now runs the restaurant along with her husband James “Woody” Woodrow.

Smith’s memorial service is Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Baldwin-Fairchild Conway Funeral Home at 1413 S. Semoran Blvd. in Orlando. The Smith family and friends are gathering afterward at Beefy King for a private celebration.

Since the restaurant is closed Sundays, it will reopen Monday.
